The HSE is undertaking a review of all service users of the facility, based in Swinford, Co Mayo, which the Psychiatric Nursing Association (PNA) claims will lead to its closure.
“We understand it will close and we have concerns that need to be addressed. We believe it will be closed in 2018 or 2019,” said Des Kavanagh of the PNA.
Residents will be moved to smaller residential homes. Mr Kavanagh said more staff must be hired to provide adequate cover in the new homes and called for a proper level of support and regulation.
“The current services are being regulated by Hiqa and it is important that a high level of regulation will continue. More staff will be required for these smaller units and must be provided. These homes, if properly staffed and regulated, will add to the quality of life of residents and that is what it is all about,” he added.
